Growing up we would spend weekends down at my grandparents house on the Magothy and Choptank Rivers fishing and crabbing off their piers or out on the bay in my great-grandfathers 16ft aluminum john boat. At the age of 10 I started chasing bass with bait at local ponds and reservoirs in Central Maryland. Through my teenage years my parents forced me to spend my time outside, in which I found myself hiking and exploring a spring creek in our neighborhood, a branch of the Patapsico River chock full of warmwater species and a few holdover brown trout. These places quickly turned into my “happy place” where I could go to clear my head. At the age of 21 I was introduced to fly fishing by a friend and the addiction grew from there, started spending every waking moment on the rivers, such as the Gunpowder, Savage and North Branch of the Potomac. After a few years of battling the crowded rivers of the east coast I sold anything of value, packed up all my fly gear and bought a one-way ticket out west to chase trout in the Rockies. Since then my affection for the sport has grown as I expand my horizons to new species and techniques, combine that with the “what’s around the corner” mentality that keeps this drive alive.
