Lower Provo River Fly Fishing Info
The Lower Provo River is an exceptional Blue Ribbon Fishery boasting a healthy trout population, along with abundant aquatic insects and scenic views of Mount Timpanogos. The upper reaches of the Lower Provo immediately below Deer Creek Dam is a classic tailwater fishery with gin-clear water and healthy brown and rainbow trout populations. Halfway down the canyon, however, the characteristic of the river changes drastically below the Olmstead Diversion Dam, with pocket water and shallow riffles becoming the norm. The Lower Provo remains fishable down to Utah Lake; although, anglers can expect a far more urban fishing experience once the river exits Provo Canyon.
Access
Access to the Lower Provo River can be found at multiple pull-outs along Provo Canyon Scenic Byway (Highway 189). Though public access is permitted at most points above the Olmstead Diversion Dam, a number of private sections exist immediately below Deer Creek Dam. Be sure to check local regulations when accessing this section of the Provo River.
When to Fish
The most popular time to fish the Lower Provo is typically during spring when BWOs are hatching; although, this section of the Provo is a consistent fishery throughout the year. At the height of summer, tubers floating the river take control, making fly fishing more difficult. For those willing to brave the tubers, summer can provide great fly fishing.
Fishing Regulations
Restricted to artificial flies and lures only.
